PECOS MOUNTAINS

ASPENS, RIVERS, MOUNTAINS, AND SO MUCH SOLITUDE

From 100-foot-drop waterfalls and crumbled talus slopes to dramatic rock cliffs, towering peaks, and wildflower meadows best caught in July and August, this is one of the coolest areas to explore. Wildlife in the mountains includes elk, deer, bear, turkey, and one of America's healthiest herds of Rocky Mountain Bighorn Sheep.

If you're up for some unplanned adventures, quiet camping, and beautiful views, then pack up some hiking boots and fishing poles and hit the forest roads. We suggest Iron Gate Road.

We recommend camping off of Iron Gate Road.
